The Future of Space Exploration Starts on Earth

Image
The Space Launch System (SLS), Orion spacecraft and commercial crew and cargo vehicles are complementing initiatives that will support NASA’s space exploration goals. The commercial crew and cargo launch vehicles will support human space operation in low-Earth orbit, which is creating a supply line to and from the International Space Station. These types of vehicles can travel to destinations hundreds of miles beyond Earth. The SLS heavy-lift rocket is designed for missions beyond Earth’s orbit into deep space regions where humans have not traveled since Apollo sent humans to the moon more than 40 years ago. SLS offers more versatility and provides unsurpassed capability for humans in Orion to travel to an asteroid 40,000 miles beyond the moon and eventually to Mars more than a million miles away, and for robotic science mission to places such as Mars, Saturn and Jupiter. Quantum computing of the near future: Overcoming society’s most profound challenges

Image
Andrew Lord, Senior Manager of Optical Networks Research at BT, discusses how significant challenges in several industries could be solved by quantum computing of the near future. With every passing year, quantum computing of the near future has become closer to being implemented in the modern digital world. To date, a significant amount of investment has gone into research and prototyping, capturing the attention of governments, cryptology experts, businesses, and the cybersecurity industry. Quantum computing can simultaneously perform calculations on many bits of information, solving problems infeasible by conventional computers. This has far-reaching implications for the ability to solve challenges that are currently considered intractable due to their inherent complexity. Measurement and analysis of huge amounts of health data to make preventative action possible is just one example of an area that could soon be greatly transformed by quantum computing. However, qua...
