Fedora 42 now an official Windows Subsystem for Linux 2 distro

Fedora 42 Is Now an Official WSL2 Distro — Here's Why It Matters

If you're a developer who loves Fedora and works in a Windows environment, today’s a good day. Fedora 42 is now officially supported on Windows Subsystem for Linux 2 (WSL2), making it easier than ever to run your favorite RPM-based Linux distribution alongside your Windows tools—no VM or dual-boot needed.

This marks a significant step forward for both the Fedora Project and WSL. Until now, getting Fedora running on WSL2 meant using community images or building your own. With Fedora 42, Microsoft and the Fedora team have collaborated to make it an officially available image you can install with a single command.

Once installed, Fedora 42 behaves just like it does on bare metal. You’ll get the dnf package manager, a minimal but functional set of command-line tools, and easy access to the latest development packages. Fedora 42 ships with GCC 15, LLVM 20, Python 3.13, and more—great for developers who want cutting-edge tooling.

Another nice touch: the default user has passwordless sudo privileges, so you're ready to build, test, and tinker right out of the box. And while GUI app support is still maturing on Fedora’s WSL2 build, it’s compatible with Windows' built-in WSLg feature if you install graphical apps via Flatpak or RPM.

A few caveats to keep in mind: WSL2 still relies on Microsoft’s custom Linux kernel, currently based on version 5.15. That means you might miss out on the very latest kernel features Fedora normally ships. And if you're on Windows 10, you’re out of luck—Fedora 42 on WSL2 requires Windows 11 or Server 2022+.

Still, this is a welcome addition for Fedora fans and a win for the Linux-on-Windows movement. It makes Fedora more accessible, improves dev workflows, and gives users more choice in their Linux experience under WSL2. Whether you’re writing code, managing containers, or just want a sleek Linux shell inside Windows, Fedora 42 is now a first-class citizen.
